Cratermaze is an overhead maze action game for the TurboGrafx-16. You explore enclosed layouts, gather treasure, and use a shovel to trap pursuing monsters. The central task combines collecting the items needed for an exit with making enough room to reach it safely.

Gameplay

Move along the maze corridors and dig holes in the path of approaching enemies. A monster that falls into a hole can be buried, temporarily clearing the way and sometimes leaving a useful item behind. Your shovel makes enemy control a question of placement and timing rather than simply firing in the direction you face. Collect the stage’s treasure to reveal the key, then obtain it and find the exit. More complicated layouts introduce movement devices such as springs and warp points, requiring attention to where each route leads. Power-ups can expand your options for dealing with monsters, but the collecting objective remains central. Returning through a corridor can be necessary after the key appears, so an area cleared earlier may need to be handled again. The goal is to finish the maze with a safe route through its remaining dangers.

Good to know

The USA label identifies the North American release. Cratermaze’s Japanese counterpart uses the Doraemon license and different characters. This entry uses the North American presentation and its shovel-based maze action.
