Zero 4 Champ is a drag-racing game with adventure elements for the TurboGrafx-16. Its races cover a straight 400-meter course, emphasizing the launch and gear changes over cornering. Between contests, you use menus to explore the racing setting, interact with characters, and work on improving the car you bring to the starting line.

Gameplay

A race begins with the starting lights, followed by a short contest of acceleration. Operating the accelerator, clutch, and gear shift in the right sequence is central to building speed. The directional controls work with the transmission’s shift pattern, making gear selection more involved than pressing a single automatic shift button. A poor launch or awkward change can cost much of a race because the finish arrives quickly. Outside the race, earning and spending money supports the broader progression, including vehicle improvements and encounters with other racers. The adventure portions connect individual runs into a longer campaign, giving you reasons to return with a stronger car and better control of the transmission. Learning the relationship between engine speed and shifting is part of becoming competitive. Each run offers a direct comparison against an opponent, with the result reflecting both the car’s preparation and how effectively you carry out the short acceleration sequence.
