Deep Blue – Kaitei Shinwa is an underwater horizontal shoot ’em up for TurboGrafx-16. You control an angelfish-shaped submarine moving through waters crowded with hostile marine creatures. Its unusual setting pairs recognizable sea life with the movement and weapon collecting of a scrolling arcade shooter.

Gameplay

The submarine can move around the playfield while the underwater scenery advances. Enemy creatures approach in groups, and the surrounding space can become crowded quickly. Weapon pickups change your attack, while other items improve performance and help you handle the next wave. The craft can survive several hits, with its condition communicated through changes in its eyes. Avoiding damage for a while allows recovery, making stretches of safe movement valuable. A hit also interrupts the submarine and weakens its equipment, which can make a difficult situation harder to escape. You therefore have to weigh the benefit of collecting an item against the danger of entering a dense group of enemies. Progress depends on keeping a usable route through the marine life, maintaining enough firepower to clear that route, and surviving the larger enemies that end the stages.
