Gai Flame is a turn-based military strategy game for TurboGrafx-16 featuring giant robots, tanks, and futuristic aircraft. It divides play between a wider strategic map and smaller battlefields where opposing units fight directly. You select and deploy a force, then move it between contested areas. When both sides occupy the same battlefield, the action shifts to the local terrain for a tactical encounter.

Gameplay
On the broader map, unit placement determines where fighting will happen and which groups can support the same front. Inside a battle, you move individual machines into position and choose attacks according to their reach and the available space. Different movement and attack ranges make some units better suited to leading an approach while others contribute from farther away. Concentrating attacks can remove an enemy before it has another chance to damage your force, but spreading out changes which parts of the field you can cover. Short combat animations show the results of exchanges before control returns to the tactical view. Once the local opposition has been eliminated, the wider map becomes the focus again. The game therefore asks you to think about two connected decisions: where your forces should fight and how to handle the smaller encounter once it begins.
