Gaia no Monshou is a TurboGrafx-16 fantasy strategy game, also known as The Crest of Gaia. Its battles use turns and compact maps, with armies made up of units that have different movement and attack abilities. You direct troops through a series of tactical decisions rather than controlling a single fighter. Several modes let you play prepared battles, assemble forces, or follow a connected campaign.

Gameplay
Each turn gives you opportunities to move troops and attack nearby opposition. A unit’s useful position depends on its range, the terrain around it, and the enemy forces that can reach it next. Keeping tougher troops between vulnerable allies and approaching enemies helps organize a defensive line. Ranged attacks create other opportunities, but terrain can interfere with the route to a target. Scenario mode places you in predetermined battles, making it a direct way to learn how the different units interact. Construction lets you choose forces for a map and try different combinations. Campaign makes army management part of a longer sequence, with points used to recruit troops for upcoming battles. The cost of losses carries forward through that resource system. A victory with heavy casualties can therefore leave you less prepared for what comes next.
