Galaga ’88 is a fixed-screen space shooter for the TurboGrafx-16’s Japanese counterpart, the PC Engine. It expands the Galaga formula with larger enemy formations, colorful space scenery, and the ability to build a triple fighter. You control a ship near the bottom of the screen while alien squadrons assemble overhead and swoop down to attack.

Gameplay
Move left and right to line up shots, clear each formation, and stay out of diving enemies’ flight paths. Enemies approach in organized groups before breaking away, so their entrance patterns matter as much as the bullets already on screen. The capture mechanic adds a choice: a Boss Galaga can take your fighter, and a successful rescue joins ships together for greater firepower. Building a larger fighter widens your shot coverage, but it also creates a bigger target to protect. Challenging Stages interrupt the regular battles with coordinated enemy dances that reward accurate shooting. Success comes from clearing incoming waves while keeping enough room to dodge the next attack. The mix of formation shooting, rescue attempts, and bonus rounds gives each run several different demands.
