Gekisha Boy is a photography action game for the TurboGrafx-16’s Japanese counterpart, the PC Engine. You guide photography student David Goldman through scrolling scenes while aiming his camera at unusual events. The objective is to capture valuable pictures and reach each assignment’s score requirement, turning a walk through busy surroundings into a test of observation.

Gameplay
Your attention is split between the photographer and the camera’s aiming frame. David must avoid objects in his path while the frame tracks brief visual incidents elsewhere on screen. A useful photograph depends on catching an event at the right moment, so taking pictures indiscriminately can waste film. Successful shots award points and can produce supplies or camera improvements that help with later opportunities. Film also functions as a survival resource, giving missed shots and collisions a shared cost. The scenes contain visual jokes and events that happen quickly enough to escape notice on a first attempt. Replaying an assignment lets you recognize when a subject will appear and prepare the frame in advance. The central challenge is meeting the required score without losing track of David’s immediate safety.
