Genpei Toumaden Ni no Maki is a sword-based action platformer for the TurboGrafx-16’s Japanese PC Engine counterpart. It continues Kagekiyo’s supernatural battles with large characters and close-range combat. The game is the sequel released in North America as Samurai-Ghost, and its action centers on the larger-scale fighting style used in the first Genpei Toumaden.

Gameplay
Move through side-scrolling areas, jump across hazards, and fight enemies with Kagekiyo’s sword. Different attack positions and defensive stances make the spacing between fighters important. Holding a guard can help deal with an approaching threat, while changing the direction of an attack provides ways to reach enemies at different heights. The large character sprites make each exchange easy to see, but they also demand care when navigating crowded platforms. A candle display represents health, and recovery items help sustain a run through the separate sections. Weapon pickups temporarily extend Kagekiyo’s fighting options, including greater reach and special attacks. Boss battles require you to recognize openings while preserving enough health to finish the encounter. Progress depends on switching between measured swordplay and accurate movement as the terrain changes around you.
