Gokuraku! Chuuka Taisen is a horizontal shoot ’em up for the TurboGrafx-16’s Japanese PC Engine counterpart. Related to the arcade game known as Cloud Master, it replaces spacecraft with a cloud-riding hero and a fantasy setting inspired by Chinese legends. Spirits and strange creatures fill the scrolling route, giving the shooting a playful visual style.

Gameplay
Fly around the screen, fire at approaching enemies, and avoid their shots as the scenery advances. The ability to turn around and shoot behind you matters because threats can approach from more than one direction. Power-up items improve your offensive options, while shops provide additional attack abilities during the journey. These include different shot patterns, so choosing an upgrade changes which parts of the screen you can cover comfortably. The challenge is to keep a useful firing position without letting enemies close in from an unprotected angle. Boss encounters break up the traveling sections and require concentrated attacks while you read their movements. Losing a life sends you back to a restart point, making each stretch a test of consistent survival. The cloud-riding setting changes the look of the action while keeping precise dodging and weapon use central.
