Hanii in the Sky is a vertical shoot ’em up for the TurboGrafx-16’s Japanese PC Engine counterpart. Its hero is a flying haniwa clay figure sent to rescue Izanami. The game combines scrolling enemy encounters with an unusual aiming system: Hanii’s weapon rotates independently of his movement, allowing shots in eight directions.

Gameplay

Guide Hanii around the playfield while turning his weapon to face incoming enemies. Each rotation moves the aim clockwise, so lining up a target can require several deliberate taps. Enemies can approach from different sides, making the direction of fire just as important as the character’s location. Defeating them earns points that also serve as currency for buying equipment and supplies. The shop provides upgrades, recovery items, and other support, giving your score a role beyond setting a record. Hanii has a health meter, and recovery supplies must be used through the menu when needed. Previously visited areas can be revisited, allowing additional fighting and equipment purchases before another attempt at a difficult section. The result is a shooter in which preparation and resource use sit alongside aiming, dodging, and learning the enemy patterns.
