Idol Hanafuda Fan Club is a hanafuda card game for the TurboGrafx-16’s Japanese PC Engine counterpart. It uses koi-koi, a game of collecting combinations from a deck illustrated with seasonal flowers and other motifs. The competition is presented through matches against illustrated women, and the game includes adult imagery with nudity as a reward for winning.

Gameplay

Choose a card from your hand and match it with a table card from the same month. Captured cards contribute toward scoring combinations called yaku. After forming a valid combination, you can claim the points or call koi-koi to continue the round in pursuit of a larger total. Continuing creates a risk because the opponent may complete a combination before you can improve yours. Reading the captured cards helps you judge which combinations are still possible and how close either player is to scoring. Special cards selected before a match can alter the conditions or provide an advantage. Opponents are faced in a set sequence, and losing can end the current game. The challenge is understanding the deck’s groupings and judging when the value of continuing outweighs the safety of taking an available score.

Good to know

This Japanese release includes Japanese text and menus; familiarity with koi-koi scoring helps with the card decisions.
