Jigoku Meguri is a side-scrolling action platformer for TurboGrafx-16, based on Taito’s arcade game known internationally as Bonze Adventure. You guide a Buddhist monk through an underworld filled with spirits and other supernatural enemies. Jumping and projectile attacks work together throughout the journey, with uneven ground and dangerous gaps making movement as important as fighting.

Gameplay

The monk attacks by throwing bouncing prayer beads, letting him hit creatures without walking directly into them. Their path matters when an enemy approaches across different heights or waits beyond an obstacle. You move through scrolling areas, jump between safe surfaces, and look for openings between attacks. Enemy contact and environmental hazards threaten your limited lives, so reaching the next stretch requires both accurate jumps and careful spacing. Collectible items can improve your attacks and help you deal with tougher opposition. Boss encounters interrupt the platforming with larger targets and patterns to learn. The game’s supernatural setting gives its creatures a distinctive appearance, but the immediate task stays clear: keep a safe route ahead while clearing whatever blocks the way. Movement, aiming, and the timing of each jump remain closely connected.
