Magical Chase is a side-scrolling shoot ’em up for the TurboGrafx-16. You guide Ripple, an apprentice witch riding a broom, through a fantasy world after she releases demons from a forbidden book. Gameplay
The screen advances horizontally as Ripple flies through enemy formations and environmental obstacles. Her two star companions provide supporting shots, and their placement and firing direction can be adjusted. Locking them into position lets you cover an approach while moving Ripple elsewhere. The stars can also intercept smaller enemy bullets, so their location affects both offense and defense. Defeated enemies leave crystals that serve as money at shops, where you can purchase stronger weapons, useful items, and health recovery. Ripple has a health meter, giving you room to survive mistakes and recover during a run. Boss encounters require sustained fire and careful movement around their attacks. The combination of adjustable companions and shopping gives each stretch a balance between collecting resources and keeping a safe flight path.
