Mahjong Gakuen – Touma Soushirou Toujou is a competitive mahjong game for the TurboGrafx-16. Matches against illustrated opponents form the main activity, with character scenes giving the tile games a school-themed presentation. Play centers on building a legal winning hand while responding to the tiles that enter and leave the table.

Gameplay
During a hand, you draw tiles, examine the combinations available, and select a tile to discard. Most standard winning hands use four groups and a pair, but completing that shape also requires meeting the rules for a valid scoring hand. A useful tile can extend a sequence, complete a matching group, or improve the choices available on a later draw. Discards provide information about what opponents may be collecting, so the safest decision is not always the one that advances your own hand fastest. The console interface handles the table and scoring while you choose through the displayed commands. Recognizing the character, bamboo, and circle suits makes reading your hand easier. Progress depends on winning mahjong matches rather than clearing a pile of tiles, with each new draw changing which combinations are worth pursuing.
