Mesopotamia is a TurboGrafx-16 action shooter known in North America as Somer Assault. Its unusual hero is a pink spring-like creature that crawls around surfaces and fires shots from its sides. Floors, walls, and ceilings all become routes as you search for a way through each stage.

Gameplay
Move along the connected surfaces of a level, using short jumps to cross gaps or transfer to another platform. The spring’s orientation changes with the surface it occupies, so movement and shooting are closely linked. Attacking from a wall creates a different firing position from attacking along the floor. This makes a level’s layout part of the combat, since reaching a useful surface can give you a better angle on an enemy. The stages involve finding a route through enclosed passages and defeating the boss before time runs out. Enemies and projectiles demand attention while you work out where to go next. Bosses use zodiac themes, adding a recognizable identity to the encounters. Success depends on getting comfortable with the spring’s movement, keeping track of the route, and placing its side-firing attacks where they can connect. Taking an indirect path can sometimes provide a cleaner approach.
