Gameplay
You begin by choosing companions whose abilities determine how the party handles encounters. Physical strength and magic serve different purposes, so the group’s makeup affects more than its appearance. Exploration uses an overhead view as you move between settlements and dangerous areas. Random encounters interrupt travel with turn-based battles, where you select actions for each surviving character. Attacks, spells, and items provide different responses to the monsters facing you. Winning encounters earns experience, gradually improving the party’s ability to survive stronger opposition. Equipment also matters, giving you a reason to consider purchases and prepare before traveling farther. Health and magical resources connect individual battles to the larger journey, since spending too much in one fight can leave the group vulnerable afterward. Animated enemies and forceful defeat effects reinforce the game’s grim atmosphere. The central loop is gathering information, strengthening your party, and advancing toward the sword that gives the adventure its name.
