Psycho Chaser is a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up for the TurboGrafx-16. You control an armed android seen from above, moving through hostile territory as enemies enter from different directions. Its defining feature is a set of four switchable weapons with separate upgrade levels, making firepower management part of the action.

Gameplay

You dodge incoming shots while using the weapon best suited to the enemies around you. The available firing patterns cover different directions, including forward attacks, sideways coverage, and homing lightning. Switching changes which part of the screen you can threaten, so an enemy approaching from the side may call for a different choice than one directly ahead. Collectible energy contributes to weapon upgrades between stages. Distributing that energy affects the strength of your arsenal during the next section, giving each completed stage a brief planning step. Other pickups can alter movement speed or add supporting missiles. Moving into position to collect an item still exposes the android to enemy fire, which makes upgrades a matter of risk as well as reward. The combination of continuous scrolling and selectable coverage keeps attention divided between survival and the shape of your attacks.
