Shougi Shodan Icchokusen is a shogi game for the TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine, developed by Home Data. It presents Japanese chess through conventional matches and a story mode inspired by Momotaro folklore. The combination gives players both a direct board-game setting and a themed sequence of opponents to challenge.

Gameplay

You select a piece and choose its destination, building an attack while keeping your own king protected. Shogi pieces have different movement rules, and promotion can change what they can do after entering the opponent’s side of the board. Captured pieces can return to play through drops, so a piece taken earlier may become a new threat in an unexpected position. That rule makes defending empty spaces important alongside protecting occupied squares. The Momotaro mode frames matches as encounters with demons, while other modes provide more conventional contests and stronger opponents. A replay feature lets you revisit completed games and examine how a position developed. The main decisions remain those of shogi: develop your pieces, recognize threats, and coordinate an attack that the opposing king cannot escape. Planning several moves ahead becomes increasingly important as opponents become stronger.
