Gameplay

Each turn asks you to select a piece, consider its legal moves, and commit to a position that supports your larger plan. The goal is to checkmate the opposing king while keeping your own king safe. Promotion changes the movement of eligible pieces, and captured pieces become available to drop back onto the board. Those drops mean an apparently empty square can become dangerous quickly. The computer offers several difficulty levels, while time settings influence how long each side can consider a move. Higher settings can require patience as the computer evaluates its response. A successful attack often depends on coordinating several pieces rather than sending one forward alone. Defending also requires watching the opponent’s captured pieces, since those reserves may enter near your king. The game centers on that continuing exchange of threats, protection, and opportunities to improve your position.
