Toy Shop Boys is a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up for TurboGrafx-16’s Japanese PC Engine. A group of three boys fights through a world of hostile toys, with one character leading while the other two follow behind. Switching the leader changes your attack, making the formation itself an important part of the shooting.

Gameplay
You guide the group around the screen and fire at toy-themed enemies as the scenery scrolls upward. The active boy provides the main weapon, while the two followers trail his movements and can absorb incoming bullets. Changing who leads gives access to a different attack, so switching is useful when enemy placement makes the current weapon less effective. The trailing characters also make movement less simple than steering a single small craft: their positions depend on the route you have just taken. Pickups affect your strength and movement speed, and collecting them can require crossing an occupied part of the screen. Enemy formations and larger confrontations test how well you use the available attacks while keeping the leading character safe. Its toy imagery includes familiar objects such as small vehicles and stuffed animals, giving each wave a playful appearance even as the patterns demand close attention.
