Violent Soldier is a horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up for the TurboGrafx-16, also known as Sinistron in North America. You pilot a spacecraft through enemy formations and enclosed passages, collecting weapons while avoiding incoming fire. Its most distinctive feature is the adjustable armored jaws at the front of the ship, which connect your firing pattern to your protection.

Gameplay
Opening the ship’s jaws spreads its fire across a wider area, while closing them concentrates the attack and provides frontal shielding. That makes each adjustment a decision about the threats ahead. A narrow passage may call for precise positioning, while enemies spread across the screen can make broader coverage useful. Colored pickups change the weapon type, including a regular gun, a wave-style laser, and homing missiles. Additional shield pieces can hover above and below the craft, adding protection around its sides. A charged attack offers another way to damage nearby targets. Progress depends on reading both the level’s layout and the patterns of enemies entering it. Large opponents and confined spaces leave little margin for careless movement. The ship’s equipment can help you survive, but choosing where to fly remains just as important as maintaining fire.
